If you would like to go shopping during the day, or see a show in the evening, without straying too far from the hotel, the Palais des Congrès de Paris (at 2 Place de la Porte Maillot, 75017 Paris) is the answer to your every wish. Set at the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, this building was inaugurated in 1974 and at the time was one of the biggest congress centres in Europe. In 1999, extension work doubled the exhibition space and it became a national showcase for economic, social and cultural activity in France.
Behind the imposing inclined plane of its façade, numerous venues, lecture theatres, conference rooms and two levels of shopping mall occupy over 32,000 m2. The mall is perfect for shopping, with all the big names in women's and men's fashion, travel agents and numerous specialist stores: health & beauty, jewellery, opticians... There are several restaurants too, and a cinema where all the latest releases are shown. Throughout the year activity at the Palais is punctuated by major conferences and professional events. While most are reserved for specialists, some trade fairs are also open to the public.
Last but not least, the Palais des Congrès has one of the best venues for shows in Paris. The stage of its grand theatre, 26 meters by 22, is big enough to perform opera and ballet. This is where the musical shows Starmania and Notre-Dame de Paris were created.
